Regardless of whoever wins the election on Tuesday, how many promises were made and who’s going to do what and when to build the economy, Businesses still need to focus on the who, the what and the why they do what they do. Here are three of my business basics, for your consideration. A consideration that is based on the how and why businesses do what they do.
1. Business is or can be inherently good, from an ethical perspective.
The key word here, is “inherently.” Can a business be inherently anything? If it can, what is it based on: purpose, product or service, market share or ??
If a business is inherently “good”, how does protect itself from inherently “bad” influences?
2. Business can be done in either an ethical or unethical way.
If this is true, then how does an organization, insure that the ethical path is taken the majority of the time? Consider, can a business be ethical and yet not be in compliance? If so, what could be the consequences?
3. The study of ethics can have some benefit in sensitizing people to ethical problems and providing them with the means and tools to find a good solution to those ethical problems.
This point is crucial. Do businesses provide the study of ethics in the training of their people?? If not, why not? If so, what have been the results?
If the image of “business” has been tarnished, (rightly or wrongly), and these
“basics” make sense, then an investment (not cost) in the study of ethics needs to be a non-negotiable training course.
